Code of conduct for Children

Children/young people are expected to:

  • Be loyal and give their friends a second chance.
  • Be friendly and particularly welcoming to new members.
  • Be supportive and committed to other team members, offer comfort when required.
  • Not get involved in inappropriate peer pressure and push others into something they do not want to do.
  • Keep within the defined boundary of the playing/coaching area.
  • Behave and listen to all instructions from the coach.
  • Take care of equipment owned by the club.
  • All members must respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of age, gender identity, ability, race, cultural background or religious beliefs or sexual identity.
  • Refrain from the use of bad language or racial/sectarian references. This includes bullying using technologies like social media or texting.
  • Refrain from bullying or persistent use of rough and dangerous play.
  • Members should keep to agreed timings for training and competitions or inform their coach or team manager if they are going to be late.
  • Members must wear suitable kit- Runners/Basketball Boots, Shorts, Training top/ Jersey & Tracksuit for training and match sessions, as agreed with the coach/team manager.
  • Member must not wear jewellery (Bracelets, Rings & Earrings) for training and match sessions.
  • Members must pay any fees for training or events promptly.
  • Junior members are not allowed to smoke on club premises or whilst representing the club at competitions.
  • Junior members are not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs of any kind on the club premises or whilst representing the club.
  • Show respect to other youth members/leaders and show team spirit.
  • Keep themselves safe.
  • Report inappropriate behaviour or risky situations for youth members.
  • Play fairly and be trustworthy.
  • Respect officials and accept decisions and play within the rules.
  • Show appropriate loyalty and be gracious in defeat.
  • Challenge or report the bullying of your peers.
  • Respect opponents.
  • Not cheat or be violent/aggressive.
  • Not use violence.
  • Make your club a fun place to be.

 

Children/Young people have the right to

  • Be safe and happy in their chosen activity.
  • Be listened to.
  • Be respected and treated fairly.
  • Privacy.
  • Enjoy your sport in a protective environment.
  • Be referred to professional help if needed.
  • Be protected from abuse by other member or outside sources.
  • Participate on an equal basis, appropriate to their ability.
  • Experience competition and the desire to win
  • Be believed.
  • Ask for help.
  • Any misdemeanours and general misbehaviour will be addressed by the immediate coach and reported verbally to the designated person. Persistent misbehaviour will result in dismissal from the club/sport. Parents will be informed at all stages.
  • Dismissals can be appealed by the coach/volunteer with final decisions taken by the club committee or referred to the governing body depending on the disciplinary procedures within the sport.

 

Code of conduct for Coaches

  • Coaches must familiarise themselves with Basketball Ireland’s most up to date code of conduct for coaches which is available on BI website.

 

Code of Conduct for Parents

  • Parents/guardians have the primary responsibility for the care and welfare of their children within our club
  • Parents/guardians should encourage their children to participate in sport for fun and enjoyment and should ensure that their child’s experience of sport is a positive one.
  • Lessons learned in children’s sport will shape values and attitudes in adult life.
  • They should always remember that children play sport for their own enjoyment, not that of parents/ guardians.
  • Parents/guardians have a duty to ensure that the context in which their child is participating is appropriate.
  • Parents/guardians and Sports leaders will ideally work in partnership to promote good practice in children’s sport and to support all efforts to protect against neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse in sporting activities.
  • To do so, parents/guardians should ensure that sports clubs treat their children with fairness, respect and understanding, and that the club is fulfilling its responsibility for safeguarding children.
  • They should encourage their children to tell them about anyone causing them harm.
  • They should become aware of club procedure and policies, in particular where changes are made that affect them or their children, and be informed of all matters relating to ethics and good practice.
  • They should check that the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sport has been adopted and implemented in the club.
  • Parents/guardians should remember that children learn best by example.

 

TO ASSIST IN THE PROMOTION OF GOOD PRACTICE WITHIN THE CLUB PARENTS/ GUARDIANS SHOULD:

  • Be aware of the relevant coaches, team managers, children's officers, DLP, etc.
  • Show appreciation of and respect for the volunteers and their decisions, encourage their child to play by the rules
  • Behave responsibly on the sideline
  • Focus on their child’s efforts rather than performance
  • Focus on the fun and participation of the child in sport
  • Liaise with the coaches and team managers as to the time/locations of games and training sessions
  • Be a role model for children and maintain the highest standards of conduct when interacting with children, other parents, officials and organisers
  • Encourage your child to play by the rules
  • Always behave responsibly on the sidelines and do not seek to unfairly affect the game on court or the player on court
  • Parents/spectators should not coach from the sidelines
  • Take care not to expose any young player, intentionally or unintentionally, to embarrassment or disparagement by the use of flippant or sarcastic remarks
  • Always recognise the value and importance of the volunteers who provide sporting/recreational opportunities for your child
  • Respect referees, coaches, organisers and other players
  • Teach your child that honest endeavour is as important as winning and do all you can to encourage good sportsmanship
  • Set a good example by applauding good play on both sides
  • Encourage mutual respect for teammates and opponents
  • Ensure that their children are collected at the appointed times
  • Support all efforts to remove abusive and bullying behaviour in all its forms

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS/GUARDIANS: 

  • Youghal Basketball has a duty of care for volunteers working with young players on behalf of the organisation.
  • Youghal Basketball is committed to safeguarding children and adhering to best practice policies, we can only do this with the support and commitment of parents.
  • Parents are responsible for the transport of players to training sessions and games.
  • Parents must ensure their children arrive and leave from training sessions in a timely fashion, dropped to and collected from within 5 minutes.
  • Parents must adhere to the sign in/out policy where implemented e.g. academy.
  • POD - In order to fulfil Safeguarding requirements, all underage teams will have a Parent On Duty rota. A parent for each child will be required to sit in on their child's team training session and Home matches in rotation. Once your child is registered with the Club a parent's rota will be created for the new season. It is the responsibility of the parent (not the Team Manager) to ask another parent if they cannot make their scheduled session.
  • If a member does not attend training for 3 weeks (without communicating with coach/team manager) their membership will be suspended. We are a community club and may have waiting lists for teams and will open places that are not being used.
  • Parents are reminded that our coaches are volunteers and their time should be respected, arrange to meet with a coach if there is a need to communicate - don’t just show up to a training session.
  • During games tensions can run high. Parents are asked not to approach a coach on game day but if they have to speak to the coach they should arrange to meet at least a day later.
  • If a parent has met with a coach/assistant coach, team manager and have not resolved an issue, they are encouraged to contact one of our Children’s Officers.
  • Parents are reminded to respect the parking regulations of the Facilities.
  • Parents are responsible for communicating with the coaches and team manager, for training and game times/locations. No U16 player is to be on a WhatsApp group with adult volunteers.

SIGN IN/OUT POLICY:

  • Where implemented (Academy), parents/guardians are required to sign children in/and out of the facilities.
  • Parents/guardian of children up to and including under 12s, are required to drop/collect children from within the Gym.

 

COMPLAINTS

Anyone wishing to make a complaint about any person acting in any capacity for Youghal Basketball Club within the context of this code must follow the set procedure.

  • Submit a report in writing to the management committee of Youghal Basketball Club who may convene a Disciplinary Committee, who will be responsible for dealing with the complaint.
  • If the complaint involves a minor (a person under the age of 18) the complainer must include the confirmed age of the person involved and the CWO must be notified.
  • On receipt of a complaint, the Club Committee of Youghal Basketball Club will follow guidelines set of in Suspension or Severance of Membership, of the Constitution.
